States in Northern Nigeria have been thrown into darkness for several days as a result of vandalism of the Shiroro-Mando transmission line.
Radio Now’s Buhari Abubakar interviewed Dr. Jafar Lawal, Head of the Social Development Department at Kaduna Polytechnic, who stated that no serious nation can permit millions of its citizens to remain in total darkness for extended periods.
“Actually, what is happening is to show the extent, the extent of decay and unseriousness of the Nigerian policy makers and Nigeria as a country. Because many countries that are at war, we have seen even countries like Libya, Iraq, and a lot of them even in Africa, power outage, just like what is happening now, is unthinkable. You cannot play with energy, electricity in a serious country.
Ah, this cannot happen.” He said.
Mr. Lawal also spoke to the implications of the continued blackout in the region.
He also added that “The whole issue revolves around corruption and the way the policymakers or the government itself is indifferent about the suffering of the Nigerian people and Nigeria as a country and economy entirely because what you are saying about the informal sector of the economy, the common man, the informal sector of the economy of Nigeria has been wiped out. The middle class we are talking about that can engineer growth and development of the country is no longer there at all. So the situation is terrible.
It’s terrible.”
He also criticised the remarks made by National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, who claimed that operatives of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) are unable to address the issue due to security concerns.
He added “Well, that is showing the level, the terrible level we are in, because for the serious office of such nature to say that, it is even encouraging the workers not to go there. You cannot tell them that they should not go there because there is insecurity. Who can take care of the security issue? Is it not the government?”
