NOC Expresses Interest in 2030 Commonwealth Games with Abuja as Host City

The Nigerian Olympic Committee (NOC) has confirmed that it met the March 28, 2025 deadline to express interest in hosting the 2030 Commonwealth Games. The proposed bid names Abuja, the nation’s capital, as the host city. However, the NOC says Nigeria can only proceed with a formal bid once it secures the backing of the federal government.

Nigeria previously lost a bid to host the 2014 edition of the Games to Glasgow. But in a statement issued by NOC spokesman Tony Nezianya, the committee said a 2030 Abuja Games would offer the country an opportunity to showcase its growth, elevate its international profile, and revitalise its sporting culture.

The last major multi-sport event hosted by Nigeria was the 2003 African Games, also held in Abuja. The NOC believes the experience gained from that event provides a strong foundation for managing the logistics, infrastructure, and hospitality required to host the Commonwealth Games.

The 2026 Commonwealth Games are set to return to Glasgow, Scotland, from 17 to 29 March. The Australian state of Victoria was initially scheduled to host but withdrew due to rising costs.
