Northern Coalition Urges Constructive Dialogue on Tax Reforms

The Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG) has criticised the Presidency’s response to Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed’s remarks on proposed tax reforms.

Governor Mohammed, addressing the Christian community in Bauchi during Christmas, urged President Bola Tinubu to reconsider the reforms. He argued the proposed tax bills before the National Assembly disproportionately favour one region and risk inciting unrest.

In a rebuttal, Sunday Dare, the President’s Special Adviser on Media and Public Communication, condemned the Governor’s statements as inflammatory and a direct challenge to the Federal Government.

However, the CNG, through its National Coordinator, Comrade Jamilu Aliyu Charanchi, labelled the Presidency’s stance as dismissive. The group called for meaningful dialogue to address underlying concerns, warning that neglecting regional grievances could exacerbate national tensions.

The tax reforms remain a contentious issue, sparking debates about fairness and equity in governance.
