The Northern States Governors’ Forum (NSGF) and the Northern Traditional Rulers Council are calling for the establishment of a state police system, warning that the region is confronting an “existential threat” due to worsening insecurity.
They argue that existing security arrangements have failed to stem banditry, communal violence and widespread poverty, undermining social stability across northern states.
The group said decentralized policing would improve accountability and enable faster responses to local security crises, given the diverse and dynamic nature of threats faced by communities across the region.
