NOSDRA Blames Third-Party Interference for Oil Spills

Nigeria’s oil spill regulator, the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA), says third-party interference remains a major challenge in addressing oil spills in the Niger Delta.

NOSDRA’s Director General, Chukwemeke Woke, emphasized the agency’s role in ensuring a clean environment while supporting Nigeria’s energy agenda. He warned that unsafe operations threaten both communities and the country’s economic future.

Managing Director of Renaissance Africa Energy Company, Tony Attah, highlighted the oil industry’s crucial role, noting that nearly 90% of Nigeria’s foreign exchange comes from oil.

However, unresolved damage assessments and compensation for affected communities remain a concern. Woke cautioned that ignoring these issues could lead to unrest and disrupt oil production.

Despite these challenges, NOSDRA says it is working closely with industry players to support smooth operations and ensure that Nigeria continues to benefit from its oil resources.
