The National Security Adviser has raised concerns over the role of social media in promoting extremist ideologies. Speaking at a pre-workshop event on Nigeria’s counter-extremism strategy, the NSA’s representative, Idayat Hassan, cited TikTok, Telegram and WhatsApp as platforms being misused by extremist groups.
Hassan revealed that TikTok removed over 2,400 extremist-related posts in Nigeria within a span of 10 days, underscoring the growing online threat.

Coordinator of the National Counter-Terrorism Centre, Major General Adamu Laka, called for updated and proactive approaches, noting that extremist tactics continue to evolve.
In response, the European Union’s envoy to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Gautier Mignot, announced a €300 million grant to combat extremism and address socio-economic issues in the Northwest and Northeast.
