The Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, has urged government at all levels to intensify efforts in addressing the country’s worsening illiteracy crisis as the world marked Literacy Day.
The union said education remains dangerously underfunded and stressed that Nigeria must prioritise schooling if it is to unlock its social and economic potential.

Citing recent UNESCO and UNICEF reports, the NUJ noted that Nigeria accounts for 15 percent of the world’s out-of-school children, with millions never entering classrooms or dropping out early. The union described the situation as alarming, particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa, where enrolment figures are declining.
It further warned that inadequate funding, poor quality of teaching, and a growing exodus of educators are compounding the problem. The NUJ called for urgent reforms, increased investment, and incentives to retain teachers in the country’s education system.
