NUPENG strike will not cause fuel shortage says Dangote refinery

The Dangote refinery says Nigeria will not face fuel shortages despite an ongoing strike by the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers, NUPENG. The strike, which began on Monday, involves tanker drivers and has attracted support from local and international unions.

According to the spokesman for the refinery, Anthony Chiejina, petrol supply remains steady, adding that discussions are ongoing between the union, the government and the company. He denied claims that Dangote drivers were barred from joining unions, describing the allegation as “cheap blackmail”.

NUPENG president Williams Akporeha, however, accused the company of refusing to employ workers willing to exercise union rights. The union has received backing from the Nigeria Labour Congress, global union IndustriALL and the International Lawyers Assisting Workers network.

The Dangote refinery, which opened last year with a capacity of 650,000 barrels per day, has reduced petrol prices and increased supply in Nigeria but also raised concerns over monopoly. Plans to deploy thousands of compressed natural gas trucks for fuel distribution have been delayed due to logistics challenges.
