NUPENG Suspends Strike After Deal with Dangote Refinery

The Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers, NUPENG, has called off its planned strike after securing an agreement with Dangote Refinery on workers’ rights to unionise. The breakthrough came at a closed-door meeting mediated by the Department of State Services, with Finance Minister Wale Edun and Nigeria Labour Congress officials in attendance.

The resolution followed weeks of tension after the refinery’s initial reluctance to recognise trade unions. A Memorandum of Understanding signed by both sides confirmed that unionisation is a fundamental right under Nigerian labour laws, with the process set to commence immediately and conclude within two weeks.

As part of the deal, no employee will face reprisals over the strike notice. The Ministry of Labour confirmed it will issue a formal statement, while NUPENG pledged to suspend all strike action pending full implementation of the agreement.
