Oba of Lagos Urges Caution in Demolitions, Calls for ‘Human Face’ to Urban Renewal

The Oba of Lagos, Rilwan Akiolu, has urged the state government to show compassion in its ongoing demolitions, stressing that residents displaced by urban renewal projects must be properly resettled. Speaking at his Iga-Idugaran Palace during events marking his 82nd birthday and 22 years on the throne, the monarch said development must not come at the expense of the people.

Oba Akiolu dismissed reports that he once threatened Igbo residents during the 2014 elections, describing the allegation as “false and regrettable.” He praised many Igbo Lagosians as “men of integrity” and reiterated his commitment to peaceful coexistence.

The monarch renewed his call for special status for Lagos, urged a return of sanitation inspectors, and appealed to politicians to govern honestly, reminding them that “all must one day answer before God.”
