Ogun Government Issues Health Alert Over Rising Diphtheria Cases

The Ogun State Government has raised an alarm over the rising number of diphtheria cases across the state, describing the situation as a public health concern. The Commissioner for Health, Tomi Coker, urged residents to take urgent preventive measures to curb the spread of the disease.

Coker explained that diphtheria is a highly contagious bacterial infection that spreads easily through coughing, sneezing, or close contact. She warned that the illness could cause severe complications or death if not detected and treated early.

The commissioner emphasised that vaccination remains the most effective form of protection. She called on parents to ensure their children receive routine immunisations and advised unvaccinated adults to get protected. Symptoms of diphtheria include sore throat, fever, swollen neck, difficulty breathing, and a thick grey or white coating in the throat or nose.

Residents were also advised to maintain good hygiene, avoid close contact with anyone showing symptoms, and seek immediate medical care instead of self-medicating. Health officials say early reporting and treatment are crucial to containing the outbreak.
