Ogun Government Shuts Four Companies Over Safety Violations

The Ogun State Government has shut down four companies over industrial accidents and safety violations. Quantum Steel Industry in Ogijo, Sagamu Local Government, and Xinfeng Plastics Limited along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway were sealed after separate incidents led to fatalities. Quantum Steels was closed following an industrial explosion that left several workers hospitalised, while a machine operator at Xinfeng Plastics, Ishaku Monday, was electrocuted.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on the Ogun State Environmental Protection Agency (OGEPA), Farook Akintunde, said the closures were necessary to investigate the causes of the accidents and implement new safety measures. He warned that any company found violating safety regulations would face similar consequences, including blacklisting.

Additionally, the government shut down Wemco Nigeria Limited in Magboro and Beautiful Fibre in Ogere, both along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. Wemco was accused of obstructing officials investigating an erosion dispute with its host community, while Beautiful Fibre was penalised for exposing workers to hazardous chemicals without protective equipment, despite repeated warnings.

The affected companies will remain closed until investigations are completed and they comply with safety and environmental regulations. The government has reiterated its commitment to enforcing strict workplace safety standards to prevent further industrial accidents.
