Ogun Issues Fresh Flood Alert, Urges Coastal Residents to Relocate

The Ogun State government has warned residents in flood-prone communities to move to safer areas ahead of heavy rainfall expected between late September and mid-October.

The alert, issued on Sunday by Commissioner for Environment Ola Oresanya, covers settlements along rivers and coastal areas including Isheri, Warewa, Akute, Makun, Iwopin, Ebute-Imobi and Tungeji Island.

Authorities say the flooding will be triggered by high rainfall, tidal lock, and water inflows from northern Nigeria and neighbouring Benin. The overflow, expected to last two weeks, marks the second phase of annual flooding across the state.

The government has placed its emergency agency on standby for evacuations and has prepared temporary shelters. Residents have also been advised to avoid borehole water, while fish farmers in riverine areas have been urged to harvest early to prevent losses.
