Former PDP National Publicity Secretary, Chief Olisa Metuh, has called for an end to Nigeria’s North-South presidential zoning formula, arguing instead for competence-based leadership or a fair rotation among the six geo-political zones.
Speaking at a political science conference in Awka, Metuh proposed constitutional amendments to ban defections by elected officials, except in cases of party collapse or mergers.
He warned that weak party institutions, ideological voids, and unregulated finances undermine Nigeria’s democracy.

Metuh called for reforms including binding party manifestos, public performance tracking, campaign finance caps, and the creation of an independent body to audit party finances.
He also noted a growing public disillusionment with democracy—particularly among youth—warning against the temptation of authoritarian alternatives.
Metuh concluded by urging citizens to prioritise merit, institutional strength, and civic education in democratic consolidation.
