One Nigerian Dead After Tugboat Sinks Off South Africa

One Nigerian has died after a Nigerian tugboat, LEO, carrying 18 people sank in South African waters late on Saturday night. Twelve people were rescued, while five remain missing.

In a statement on Monday, Nigeria’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu Ojukwu, said South African transport authorities confirmed the incident. The vessel reportedly ran aground about 18 nautical miles offshore in stormy conditions between Cape Town and Durban while returning to Lagos after undergoing repairs.

The South African Ministry of Transportation confirmed one fatality and the rescue of 12 crew members. Search and rescue operations are continuing for the five others still unaccounted for.
