Only 51% of Nigerian households have access to electricity says NDHS

A new national survey has revealed that only 51 percent of Nigerian households have access to electricity.

The 2024 Nigeria Demographic and Health Survey was conducted by the National Population Commission with support from the Gates Foundation, USAID, UNICEF and other partners.

The report shows that while 98 percent of households use clean fuels or technologies for lighting — such as electricity, solar lamps or rechargeable lanterns — only 22 percent use clean energy for cooking.

It adds that the use of clean cooking fuels is much higher in urban areas at 42 percent compared to just 5 percent in rural communities.

The survey also found that only 7 percent of households use clean fuels for heating, further underscoring the country’s wide energy access gap.

Experts say the findings highlight the need for greater investment in affordable and sustainable energy solutions for rural Nigeria.
