Only the Senate Can Reinstate Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, Says National Assembly Clerk

The Office of the Clerk to the National Assembly has dismissed claims that it can decide whether Kogi Central Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, suspended in March for six months, may resume duties.

In a statement on Monday, the Clerk’s office clarified that it serves only as the legislature’s administrative arm and has no authority to review Senate resolutions.

The clarification followed a letter from the Kogi Central senator notifying the Clerk of her intention to return and a petition from her lawyers accusing the office of overreach. Officials stressed that such correspondence should be addressed to the Senate President.

The Clerk reaffirmed that only the Senate can determine her resumption, with the case still before the Court of Appeal. It urged the public to respect constitutional processes and allow the matter to be settled through parliamentary and judicial channels.
