The co-chairman of the 2026 Niger Delta Games, Sir Itiako Ikpokpo, says 2,800 athletes will participate in the multi-sport event when it opens in early 2026.
The figure was announced on Wednesday as they finalised venues, accommodation and security plans. Sports disciplines will include athletics, football, wrestling, basketball and traditional sports reflecting local culture.
Organisers said the games will also feature skills workshops, health outreach and environmental clean-up campaigns to engage communities beyond competition. They called on state governments and private sponsors to support athletes and infrastructure preparations.

The organisers expect the event to strengthen talent pipelines for national competitions while promoting peacebuilding and social inclusion across the Niger Delta.
