Ousted Rivers Council Chiefs Comply with Governor’s Handover Order

Former local government chairpersons in Rivers State, removed from office following a Supreme Court ruling, have handed over to the Heads of Local Government Administration (HLGAs) in their respective councils, in line with directives from Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

The Supreme Court on Friday nullified the local government elections conducted on 5 October 2024, prompting the governor to issue a state-wide directive on Sunday, instructing affected officials to transfer power to prevent an administrative vacuum.

By Monday, the transition had been completed. Speaking in Port Harcourt during the commissioning of Government House Quarters, former Chairman of Port Harcourt Local Government Area, Ichemati Ezebunwo, said the court’s decision had not dampened the resolve of those removed from office.

Ezebunwo also praised Governor Fubara’s commitment to governance, despite political tensions, and highlighted ongoing infrastructure projects such as the newly commissioned staff quarters.
