Over 1,000 People Dead in Sudan Landslide Disaster

At least 1,000 people have been killed in a landslide in Sudan’s Marra Mountains, according to the Sudan Liberation Movement/Army. The disaster struck Tarasin village on Sunday after days of torrential rainfall, with only one survivor reportedly found.

Many of the victims had fled earlier fighting between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces in North Darfur. Darfur’s governor, Minni Minnawi, described the incident as a “humanitarian tragedy”.

The SLM/A has appealed for urgent support from the United Nations, regional bodies, and international organisations. The group, which controls the Marra Mountains, has pledged support for the army in its conflict with the RSF.

Sudan has been gripped by civil war since April 2023, marked by famine, mass displacement, and allegations of genocide in Darfur. Rights groups say atrocities including ethnically motivated killings and sexual violence have deepened the crisis.
