The National Identity Management Commission says more than 123 million Nigerians have now been enrolled in the national identity database. Director-General Abisoye Coker-Odusote announced the figure at the National Day of Identity in Abuja, saying waiting times had been reduced by nearly half through new technology and partnerships.

She highlighted integration with the Ministry of Health to link the National Identification Number with birth registrations, and collaboration with the Nigeria Correctional Service, which has captured over 75 percent of inmates. She said Public Key Infrastructure had been introduced to strengthen data security and accessibility.

Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo told the gathering that Nigeria’s digital identity drive was vital for governance and international credibility. He called for transparency, global standardisation and private sector participation to ensure credentials issued in Nigeria are widely trusted.

President Bola Tinubu, represented by Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume, said the NIN would be the key to accessing services across the public and private sectors. He described the project as central to security, economic growth and digital inclusion, urging stronger cooperation among government agencies and global partners.
