The United Nations Children’s Agency (UNICEF) has reported alarming levels of sexual violence against children in Sudan, with at least 221 cases of rape recorded since the beginning of 2024. The report, released on Tuesday, details how armed men targeted both boys and girls, with some victims as young as one year old.
According to UNICEF, 66 percent of the survivors were girls, while boys accounted for the rest. The agency also documented 77 additional cases of sexual assault, including attempted rape. The findings were compiled from reports by gender-based violence service providers across the country.

The conflict in Sudan, which erupted in April 2023 between the military and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, has claimed at least 20,000 lives and displaced more than 14 million people. The ongoing violence has also pushed parts of the country into famine, worsening the humanitarian crisis.
UNICEF has called for urgent action to protect children from further harm, emphasising the need for stronger efforts to prevent sexual violence and provide support for survivors in the war-torn nation.
