Over 2,000 People Killed as Protests Intensify Across Iran

Anti-government protests in Iran have escalated sharply, with rights groups and security officials reporting that more than two thousand people have been killed since demonstrations began late last month. The protests started in Tehran on December 28 following the collapse of the national currency and have since spread to cities and towns across the country, turning against Iran’s clerical leadership.

The Human Rights Activists News Agency, HRANA, says it has verified the deaths of two thousand and three people, including more than one thousand eight hundred protesters and over one hundred government-affiliated individuals. The group also reports that nearly seventeen thousand people have been detained, while internet monitoring group NetBlocks says a nationwide digital blackout has been in place since last Thursday.

The unrest has been driven by public anger over economic hardship, sanctions and restrictions on freedoms. Several foreign governments, including the United Kingdom, Italy and Germany, have condemned Iran’s response and summoned Iranian envoys, while United States President Donald Trump has urged protesters to continue, without giving details of possible support.
