Over 3.7 Million People Displaced Across Nigeria says IOM

More than 3.7 million people are currently living in displacement across Nigeria due to conflict, violence and climate-related shocks, including flooding. The figure was disclosed by the Chief of Mission of the International Organisation for Migration in Nigeria, Sharon Dimanche.

She spoke while delivering a goodwill message at the First Edo State Humanitarian Summit held in Benin City. Dimanche said many displaced families are struggling to rebuild their lives and stressed the need for humanitarian efforts that go beyond emergency response.

According to her, the organisation’s work in Nigeria focuses on saving lives, protecting people on the move and supporting durable solutions to displacement through safe return, local integration and community resilience.

Dimanche also said the IOM has partnered with the Edo State Government since 2017, supporting more than 9,000 migrants to return home safely, assisting over 8,000 people with reintegration, and providing protection and counselling to more than 1,100 victims of human trafficking.
