Over 5,000 Nigerian Air Passengers Got ₦1 Billion Refunds in 3 Months Says NCAA

Domestic airlines in Nigeria refunded over ₦1 billion to more than 5,000 passengers between April and June 2025. The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority disclosed the figures in a statement on its official X account, confirming that ₦1.038 billion was reimbursed to 5,285 passengers during the three-month period.

The Authority did not give reasons for the refunds but noted that they were made in line with regulatory oversight and passenger protection laws. It explained that refunds and compensation for cancelled flights are governed by Nigeria’s civil aviation regulations, especially Part 19 of the 2023 guidelines.

The NCAA stated that affected passengers are entitled to a seat on the next available flight, not necessarily the next scheduled one, and only under certain conditions. If a flight is cancelled less than 24 hours before departure and a passenger arrives at the airport, the airline must offer assistance such as refreshments, accommodation, or compensation.

Travellers seeking refunds or compensation were advised to file formal complaints with the airline first, and escalate unresolved cases through official NCAA channels. The Authority warned that complaints shared only on social media would not be treated as valid reports.
