Over 70 Killed as Clashes Intensify in Syria’s Coastal Region

Syria is witnessing its worst violence since the ousting of Bashar al-Assad, as forces loyal to the deposed president clash with the country’s new rulers. Heavy fighting has erupted in the coastal cities of Latakia and Tartous, prompting a government-imposed curfew. The clashes reportedly began when government forces were ambushed during a security operation in Latakia.

According to the British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, at least 71 people have been killed, including 35 government troops, 32 former regime fighters, and four civilians. Several others have been injured in the violence, which has spread across the region, particularly in Latakia’s mountains and Jableh city.

The coastal region remains a flashpoint, being the stronghold of the Alawite minority and the Assad family. Armed groups from the former regime have taken control of military zones and launched attacks on checkpoints and highways.

The situation remains tense, with conflicting reports on casualty numbers and no independent verification yet. The international community is closely monitoring developments as Syria grapples with renewed instability.
