More than two-thirds of Nigeria’s electricity consumers are illegally bypassing their meters and consuming power without payment, the Nigerian Independent System Operator, NISO, has revealed.
During the Power Correspondents Association of Nigeria’s annual conference, NISO board member, Audu Lamu, said harsh economic conditions have left many unable to pay for electricity, urging government to adopt targeted subsidies that protect low-income households while ensuring commercial viability for operators. He warned that blanket subsidies only perpetuate inefficiency.

Officials also blamed technical and commercial losses for high tariffs, calling for tougher enforcement and technology-driven monitoring to stem theft and ensure fairness in tariff adjustments.
