Oxford English Dictionary Adds NigerThe Oxford English Dictionary has added several Nigerian-originated words to its glossary, including “mammy market,” “nyash,” and “amala,” in its December 2025 update released on Wednesday.
The update features more than 500 new words, phrases, and tenses from different varieties of English around the world, including West African English, alongside revisions to over 1,000 existing entries.
Other Nigerian words added include “abeg,” “biko,” “moi moi,” and “Ghana Must Go,” as well as “Afrobeats,” which the dictionary defines as a style of popular music with roots in West African sounds and global influences.

The Oxford English Dictionary said the additions reflect the growing global influence of Nigerian language, culture, and cuisine, following a similar update in January 2025 that included Nigerian expressions such as “japa,” “agbero,” “eba,” and “419.”ian Words to Latest Update
