Pan-Yoruba Leader Chief Ayo Adebanjo Passes Away in Lagos

A foremost nationalist and elder statesman, Chief Ayo Adebanjo, has passed away at the age of 96. The prominent leader of the Pan-Yoruba socio-cultural group died peacefully on the morning of Friday, February 14, 2025, at his residence in Lekki, Lagos State. His family confirmed the news in a statement released.

Adebanjo, who devoted his life to the service of God, the nation, and humanity, is survived by his wife, Chief Christy Ayo-Adebanjo, aged 94, as well as children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. The family described him as a committed fighter for truth, justice, and a truly independent and progressive Nigeria, a cause he pursued until his final moments.

Plans for a befitting funeral are underway, with consultations taking place with Adebanjo’s friends, associates, and groups across Nigeria and beyond. The family has also opened condolence registers at his Lagos home and his country residence in Isanya Ogbo, Ogun State.

Adebanjo’s passing marks the end of an era for the Pan-Yoruba movement, with many acknowledging his immense contribution to Nigeria’s national discourse and his lifelong commitment to social justice.
