The Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (PCNGI) says it plans to deploy at least 150 new CNG refuelling stations across Nigeria within the next 18 months. The move is part of efforts to improve access to alternative fuel and reduce dependence on petrol.
Chief Executive of the PCNGI, Michael Oluwagbemi, disclosed this at a press conference held at the Presidential Villa on Monday. He said the expansion would be driven by partnerships with the private sector, noting that the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) has already completed 12 sites, with eight more expected this quarter and 100 additional stations approved. Other partners, including NIPCO, Bovas, AY Shafa, Ibile Oil and Gas, MBH, and Mikano, are contributing to the rollout.

Oluwagbemi also addressed the explosion involving a CNG-powered vehicle at a NIPCO station in Benin last October, which left three people injured. He blamed the incident on the illegal fabrication of CNG cylinders by economic saboteurs, who have since been apprehended.
He assured Nigerians of the initiative’s commitment to safety, revealing that a National Gas Vehicle Monitoring System (NGVMS) is in development to ensure only certified vehicles are refuelled. The system is expected to be in place by the end of the year.
