The Peoples Democratic Party has criticised Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara for defecting to the All Progressives Congress, describing the move as pitiful. Governor Fubara announced his defection at a stakeholders’ meeting in Port Harcourt, saying he left the PDP because he did not receive protection from the party.
In a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Ini Ememobong, the PDP said the governor voluntarily chose the steps that led to his exit and cannot blame the party for abandoning or failing to defend him. The statement added that civil society groups and many Nigerians had supported him throughout the political crisis in Rivers State.
The PDP said the situation in Rivers reflects what it called the dysfunctional state of Nigeria’s democracy, where individuals have become more powerful than institutions. It accused some actors of using federal structures to intimidate political opponents.

The party further alleged that the ruling APC is working to create a one-party system in the country and to restrict political participation. It urged Nigerians and the international community to unite against any attempt to weaken democratic norms.
