Former Peruvian President Alejandro Toledo has been sentenced to 20 years and six months in prison for accepting $35 million in bribes from Brazilian construction firm Odebrecht in exchange for a freeway contract.
Mr. Toledo, who led Peru from 2001 to 2006, is the latest Latin American leader to be jailed in connection with the massive corruption scandal.
At a hearing last week, the 78-year-old expressed concerns about his health due to cancer, requesting to either be treated in a private clinic or allowed to die at home. His sentence is among the harshest imposed on officials involved in Odebrecht’s widespread bribery network across Latin America.
