Peter Obi, Others Protest at National Assembly over election results transmission

Protesters have converged on the entrance of Nigeria’s National Assembly in Abuja for an “Occupy National Assembly” demonstration over the Senate’s position on electronic transmission of election results. The protest took place on Monday, with a heavy security presence from the Nigeria Police Force, the Nigerian Army, and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps.

Civil society organisations, women’s groups, and members of the opposition African Democratic Congress, ADC, including Peter Obi joined the protest. Police barricaded the entrance, while organisers said the protest was expected to remain outside the complex, with marchers moving from the Federal Secretariat towards the National Assembly gate.

The protest follows the Senate’s passage last week of the Electoral Act 2022 (Repeal and Reenactment) Amendment Bill 2026 through a third reading. Lawmakers removed a proposed amendment that would have made real-time electronic transmission of results to the Independent National Electoral Commission’s IREV portal mandatory, instead retaining existing provisions allowing INEC to prescribe the method.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio said electronic transmission was not rejected, but the term “real-time” was removed to allow flexibility in cases of network or security challenges.
