Peter Obi Reaffirms One-Term Pledge, Says Four Years Enough for Purposeful Leadership

Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, Mr Peter Obi, has restated his commitment to serve only a single term if elected in 2027.

Writing on his official X page, Mr Obi said the quality of leadership should not be measured by time in office but by the depth of impact. Citing Abraham Lincoln, John F. Kennedy, and Nelson Mandela as examples of short but impactful leadership, he argued that legacy stems from service, not longevity.

Responding to public scepticism, Mr Obi acknowledged Nigerians’ distrust in political promises but insisted his own record speaks differently. He recalled honouring similar commitments during his tenure as governor of Anambra State.

Calling his vow “sacrosanct,” he maintained that four focused years are sufficient for meaningful governance.

He added that the constitution allows a four-year renewable term—but choosing not to renew it should not be seen as irrational.
