Peter Obi’s one-term pledge gaining northern support says Former IPAC chair

Former national chairman of the Inter-Party Advisory Council, Peter Ameh, says northern Nigerians are warming to Peter Obi’s presidential ambition and his promise to serve only one term if elected in 2027. Speaking on a monitored interview Ameh said Obi’s character, competence and performance in the 2023 elections have boosted his acceptance in the region.

Ameh, a supporter of the Labour Party candidate in the last presidential poll, said the former Anambra governor would not need time to learn the job and could deliver significant change within four years. He said Obi’s single-term pledge is aimed at maintaining Nigeria’s informal power-sharing arrangement between regions.

The ex-IPAC leader added that Obi’s support base in the north is growing despite the region’s political complexity, pointing to his 2023 election results in states such as Kaduna, Kano, Sokoto and Plateau. He also claimed President Bola Tinubu is losing support across the country, including in the north, prompting meetings between the presidency and northern lawmakers.

Ameh said Obi’s supporters would resist attempts to undermine the 2027 election and reiterated the Labour Party candidate’s commitment to completing only one term in office, focusing on managing public resources efficiently and directing them to priority areas for national growth.
