Plateau Report Exposes 12,000 Deaths in Two Decades of Violence

The Plateau State Government has received the findings of a fact-finding committee detailing more than 20 years of violence across the state. The committee, led by retired Major General Rogers Nicholas, reported that between 2001 and 2025, over 420 communities were attacked, nearly 12,000 people killed, and thousands displaced.

The report blamed ethnic mistrust, land disputes, kidnappings, cattle rustling, and illegal mining for fueling unrest, with porous borders enabling armed groups to infiltrate. Testimonies consistently identified armed Fulani militias as the main perpetrators, though other criminal elements were also implicated.

Governor Caleb Mutfwang, who received the two-volume report in Jos, described it as a turning point in addressing Plateau’s security crisis. He pledged to forward the recommendations to the President, insisting the findings would not be ignored, and vowed to prioritise peace, justice, and rebuilding across the state.
