The Federal Capital Territory Police have confirmed the arrest of human rights activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore. The arrest took place on Thursday within the premises of the Federal High Court in Abuja.
Speaking in a televised interview, Force Public Relations Officer Benjamin Hundeyin confirmed the arrest. He stated that Mr Sowore was arrested for allegedly violating a court order which prohibits protests around the Three Arms Zone in Abuja. He is currently in police custody and is expected to be charged in court today.

In response, human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong described the arrest as, quote, “preposterous.” In a post on social media, Mr Effiong said the police were making a mockery of the judicial system and called for Mr Sowore’s immediate release.
This development follows a protest led by Mr Sowore on Monday demanding the release of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu. During that earlier protest, Mr Kanu’s brother and lawyer were among those arrested and remanded in Kuje Prison.
