Police Rescue 11 of 18 Kidnapped Travellers On Benin–Akure Highway

The police say they have rescued 11 of the 18 passengers kidnapped by gunmen along the Benin–Akure highway near Obarenren village in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State. The abduction occurred on December 12 after the attackers forced a vehicle to stop at gunpoint and fired shots before taking the victims into a nearby bush.

Confirming the development, the Edo State Police Command spokesperson, ASP Eno Ikoedem, said the command received a distress call shortly after the attack and immediately mobilised security operatives to the area.

She said a joint operation involving the police, the Nigerian Army, local vigilantes and hunters was launched to comb the surrounding forest and track down the kidnappers. According to her, 11 passengers were successfully rescued on Sunday.
