Power Cut at UCH Ibadan Sparks Protests as Patients Endure 17 Days Without Power

The Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) has disconnected the University College Hospital (UCH) in Ibadan from the national grid due to an outstanding debt of N400 million. The power cut has sparked protests from patients, who have been enduring power and water shortages for the past 17 days.

Patients staged a demonstration on Monday, highlighting the severe impact of the outages, with doctors and nurses forced to rely on phone lights to navigate in the dark. Protesters expressed fears that the lack of power and water has led to preventable patient deaths.

A hospital staff member criticized IBEDC for placing UCH on the costly Band A tariff, despite the hospital’s limited resources.

This is not the first incident; UCH faced a similar disconnection in February due to technical issues and a debt of nearly N500 million at that time, according to IBEDC.
