Presidency criticises Kanu’s lawyer for joining #FreeNnamdiKanu protest

The Presidency has criticised one of Nnamdi Kanu’s lawyers, Aloy Ejimakor, for joining the #FreeNnamdiKanu protest in Abuja organised by human rights activist Omoyele Sowore. Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, expressed disappointment in a post on X, saying a lawyer representing a client in an active case should not participate in public demonstrations about the matter.

Mr Onanuga said Ejimakor’s participation violated the legal principle of sub judice, which restricts public commentary or actions that could influence an ongoing trial. He described the protest as ill-timed, adding that Ejimakor should instead focus on preparing a strong defence for his client, whose treason trial is still before the court.

The presidential aide urged legal authorities to examine the lawyer’s conduct, describing it as unethical and unbecoming of a legal practitioner. He also accused Ejimakor of engaging in what he called “extra-legal tactics” by joining forces with a known activist to pressure the judicial process.

Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra, has been in the custody of the Department of State Services since his re-arrest in June 2021. His trial on charges of treasonable felony and other offences is continuing at the Federal High Court in Abuja.
