The Nigerian Presidency says the United States government reduced visa validity for Nigerians due to concerns over visa overstays and the need for better access to applicant records.
Washington recently announced a new policy limiting Nigerian applicants to three-month single-entry visas, replacing the five-year multiple-entry visas previously issued. While the US initially cited reciprocity, officials later described the move as part of a global visa policy review.

Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga said the US had formally attributed the change to a high rate of overstays by Nigerian nationals and challenges in accessing personal data needed for consular processes.
In response, President Bola Tinubu has directed federal agencies to fully comply with international obligations and improve identity verification systems abroad.
Despite the change, Nigeria will continue to issue five-year multiple-entry visas to American citizens.
On the UAE issue, Abuja says no formal update has been received.
