President Bola Tinubu has congratulated six distinguished Nigerians selected by President Joe Biden as recipients of the 2025 Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE). This prestigious award, established by former President Bill Clinton in 1996, recognises exceptional scientists and engineers in the early stages of their careers.
The six Nigerians, honoured for their remarkable achievements in science, technology, and engineering, are among 400 awardees announced by President Biden on January 14, 2025. These individuals are employed or funded by 14 US government agencies, highlighting the significant impact of Nigerian talent on the global stage.
In a statement released by his spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu commended the honorees and praised their contributions. He emphasised that the recognition of these exceptional individuals underscores Nigeria’s vast potential for excellence, both at home and abroad.
The Nigerian recipients include Azeez Butali, Gilbert Lilly Endowed Professor of Diagnostic Sciences, College of Dentistry, University of Iowa; Ijeoma Opara, Associate Professor of Public Health (Social and Behavioral Sciences), Yale School of Public Health, Yale University; and Oluwatomi Akindele, Postdoctoral researcher at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.

Others are Eno Ebong, Associate Professor of Chemical Engineering, Bioengineering, and Biology at Northeastern University; Oluwasanmi Koyejo, Assistant Professor of Computer Science at Stanford University; and Abidemi Ajiboye, Executive Vice Chair of the Case School of Engineering, Department of Biomedical Engineering, Case Western Reserve University.
President Tinubu expressed hope that their multidisciplinary expertise would contribute to the development efforts under the country’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
