President Tinubu Demands Permanent Seats for Africa on UN Security Council

President Bola Tinubu has called for Africa to be given permanent representation on the United Nations Security Council. Speaking at the 9th Tokyo International Conference on African Development in Yokohama, Japan, he said the continent deserves two permanent seats with full privileges, including the right of veto, as well as additional non-permanent seats.

Tinubu argued that fair representation is a just demand in line with the Ezulwini Consensus and Sirte Declaration. He also praised recent successes by Nigeria’s armed forces against insurgents but stressed that lasting peace requires tackling poverty, inequality and exclusion.

The president pointed to recent peace agreements in Congo as examples of how mediation combined with investment can strengthen stability. He urged African nations to embrace market-driven partnerships rather than rely on aid and handouts.

Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, in his opening remarks, announced a new collaborative framework with the African Development Bank that will channel up to 5.5 billion dollars in financing to Africa through Japan’s International Cooperation Agency. He highlighted youth empowerment and regional integration as key areas of focus.
