President Tinubu hails Fela as music giant after Grammy honour

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has paid tribute to the late Afrobeat legend, Fela Anikulapo Kuti, following the conferment of a Lifetime Achievement Award on him by the Recording Academy of America.

In a statement personally signed on Sunday, President Tinubu said the global music community had honoured a giant, describing Fela as more than a musician but a powerful voice who challenged injustice through his art.

The president said Fela’s courage, creativity and conviction shaped a generation and continue to inspire musicians around the world, adding that his influence can be heard across Nigerian music, Afrobeats and other global sounds.

President Tinubu noted that the award makes Fela Anikulapo Kuti the first African to receive the Recording Academy’s Lifetime Achievement Award, describing it as recognition of his enduring global impact and his role in shaping modern music, even though the honour was awarded posthumously.
