President Bola Tinubu has sworn in Vice Admiral Ibok-ete Ibas (Rtd.) as the Sole Administrator of Rivers State. The appointment follows Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in the state, which suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara, Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu, and members of the Rivers State House of Assembly.
Tinubu defended his decision during a nationwide broadcast, citing Section 305 of the 1999 Constitution. He said the move was necessary to prevent the state’s political crisis from escalating further.

The decision has drawn widespread criticism from prominent Nigerians, legal experts, and political groups, including Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, the Nigerian Bar Association, the Labour Party, and the Peoples Democratic Party. They described the move as unconstitutional and reckless.
However, the pro-Nyesom Wike Assembly led by Martins Amaewhule welcomed the emergency rule, accusing Fubara of violating a Supreme Court ruling on the state’s political crisis.
