United States President Donald Trump has acknowledged for the first time that Muslims are also being killed in violent attacks in Nigeria. He made the remark during an interview with the New York Times, after months of stating that Christians were the sole targets of the violence.
President Trump said no single religion was being affected by the killings, but maintained that Christians were the main victims. He was quoted as saying that Muslims were also being killed in Nigeria, though he insisted that most of those affected were Christians.
Speaking on attacks in Nigeria during the Christmas period, Mr Trump warned that the United States could carry out further military strikes if the violence continues. He said he would prefer a one-time strike but suggested repeated action if Christians continued to be killed.

The US President had earlier described Christianity as facing an existential threat in Nigeria, redesignated the country as a Country of Particular Concern, and accused the Nigerian government of failing to protect lives. Nigeria later sent a high-level delegation to the United States, followed by visits from senior American officials to assess the security situation.
