US President Donald Trump has renewed calls to annex Greenland, citing national security and the island’s mineral resources. Trump made the remarks to reporters after Denmark’s leaders urged the United States to stop threatening Greenland, which is a semi-autonomous territory under Danish control.
Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said the US has no right to annex Greenland and highlighted that the island is covered by NATO’s security guarantees. Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens Frederik Nielsen described the notion of US control as a “fantasy” and called for dialogue through proper channels in line with international law.

The controversy escalated after a social media post from Katie Miller, wife of Trump aide Stephen Miller, showed a map of Greenland in US colours with the word “SOON”. The Danish ambassador to Washington responded, reminding the US of the two countries’ alliance and the need to respect Greenland’s territorial integrity.
