Protesters Clash with Police in Rivers and Abuja During Nationwide Rally

Demonstrators under the Take-It-Back Movement staged protests across several Nigerian states on Monday, defying police warnings. The protests, which took place in Abuja, Lagos, Oyo, Rivers, and other regions, were led by the movement’s signature orange-beret-wearing activists. The demonstrators rallied to draw attention to issues such as the misuse of the Cybercrime Act, worsening economic conditions, and the recent state of emergency in Rivers State.

In Lagos, protesters began their march at Ikeja Under Bridge, moving through major roads while chanting solidarity songs under the watchful eyes of the police. Despite earlier warnings from the Nigeria Police Force, who called the protests “ill-conceived,” activist Omoyele Sowore dismissed the claims, asserting that the protests were not meant to disrupt National Police Day celebrations.

In Rivers State, however, tensions escalated as police used tear gas to disperse protesters at Isaac Boro Park, with some protesters, including journalists, reportedly assaulted. The demonstrators had earlier informed the police of their planned protests in a letter dated April 3, 2025. Meanwhile, protests in Abuja were also broken up with tear gas, sending many fleeing.

The Take-It-Back Movement, led by Sowore, continued to voice its dissatisfaction with the government’s handling of national issues, urging for a repeal of the Cybercrime Act and demanding action on inflation and insecurity.
