Rowdy Scenes in House as Lawmakers Clash Over Lagos Trade Fair Land Probe

The House of Representatives has approved an increase in campaign spending limits for candidates contesting elective offices in Nigeria. The decision was taken during Thursday’s plenary, following a clause by clause consideration of a bill to amend the Electoral Act 2022.

Under the proposed changes, the spending ceiling for presidential candidates was raised from five billion naira to ten billion naira. Gubernatorial candidates will now be allowed to spend up to three billion naira, up from one billion, while senatorial candidates can spend up to five hundred million naira, an increase from one hundred million.

Candidates seeking election to the House of Representatives will have their spending limit raised from seventy million naira to two hundred and fifty million naira. For state house of assembly elections, the cap was increased from thirty million naira to one hundred million naira, while local government chairmanship candidates can now spend up to one hundred million naira.

Lawmakers also approved an increase in the maximum amount an individual or organisation can donate to a candidate, raising the limit from fifty million naira to five hundred million. The amendments form part of preparations ahead of the 2027 general elections and will take effect after concurrence by the Senate and assent by the President.
