The House of Representatives is debating a bill to upgrade 37 Local Council Development Areas, LCDAs, in Lagos to full Local Government Areas, LGAs.
Sponsored by James Faleke, Babajimi Benson, Enitan Badru, and 19 others, the bill passed its second reading on Wednesday. If enacted, Lagos would have 57 LGAs instead of 20.

Supporters argue the move would enhance grassroots governance. The LCDAs were established in 2003 by then-Governor Bola Tinubu but remain unrecognised under the 1999 Constitution, which only acknowledges the existing 20 LGAs in the state.
